The finishes

Eight ways to
dress a cake

The finish decides more than the colour does. It sets the texture, the silhouette, how long a decorator spends on it and what it costs. Each page below shows what the finish looks like, what it suits, and one honest note about what is hard about it in a real kitchen.

Naked cake finish
01

Naked

The naked finish leaves the sponge on show and lets the filling do the decorating. It reads warm and unfussy, and it is the fastest of the eight presets to reproduce at home because there is no smooth coat to chase.

Suits

Rustic weddings · Garden parties · Birthdays · Bridal showers

Buttercream cake finish
02

Buttercream

Buttercream is the workhorse finish and the most forgiving to brief. The renders lean on piped texture rather than colour: rosettes, ruffles, shells and comb marks that catch light across the tier.

Suits

Birthdays · Anniversaries · Baby celebrations · Office parties

Fondant cake finish
03

Fondant

Fondant is the preset to choose when the design is architectural. Flat matte planes, crisp corners and colour blocking read clearly in a render and translate well to a decorator's quote.

Suits

Modern weddings · Milestone birthdays · Graduations · Corporate events

Drip cake finish
04

Drip

A drip gives a cake movement. The renders place the run deliberately — where it falls, how far it reaches, and what sits on the crown above it — so the effect looks composed rather than accidental.

Suits

Birthdays · Teen celebrations · Dessert tables · Anniversaries

Dried flower cake finish
05

Dried flower

Dried florals give a muted, papery palette that photographs beautifully and survives a long reception. The renders place blooms as a crescent or a single cluster rather than scattering them.

Suits

Boho weddings · Engagements · Autumn celebrations · Milestone birthdays

Geometric cake finish
06

Geometric

The most restrained preset. A matte base, a few hand-drawn lines and exactly one saturated panel. It suits briefs where the cake needs to look considered rather than celebratory.

Suits

Modern weddings · Launches · Graduations · Design-led birthdays

Vintage lace cake finish
07

Vintage lace

Layered overpiping in the Lambeth tradition — scrolls built on scrolls, pearl swags and ruffled collars. It is the most labour-intensive finish in the set and the renders show it at full density so you can decide how much to keep.

Suits

Weddings · Vow renewals · Christenings · Heritage celebrations

Sculpted cake finish
08

Sculpted

Sculpted covers cakes that are not a stack of rounds: wavy forms, rounded pebbles, abstract petals. Caketta generates original shapes only — it will not produce licensed characters, mascots, team crests or brand logos.
